Battaglia (Battle), 1980
This profound piece is very much an anti-war message, specifically, the tragic bombardment of Angeli’s childhood Italian town, San Lorenzo during WWII. The artist lived through this life-altering event, but 3,000 citizens and most of the city’s structures, unfortunately did not. The grayed out aircraft flying over the foamy waves of the Mediterranean Sea are of course the bomber planes which dropped the devastation upon the town.
